Another Summer League Showdown in the Making

The New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony put together a team for a summer league showdown on Tuesday. Now, Anthony and former Syracuse University teammate Hakim Warrick are planning a game in Philadelphia.

The Phoenix Suns forward bangs with Dirk Nowitzki. How will he fair against team Melo.

Marc Stein of ESPN reports Warrick has wanted to put a game together for quite awhile, but hasn’t done it. After seeing the media coverage, You Tube videos and hype around Team Melo’s game on Tuesday, he decided it was time.

The Syracuse teammates have talked to each other and are arranging for the two teams to meet. In the ESPN piece, Warrick said Anthony will bring a different team than he did on Tuesday, which included the Miami Heat’s LeBron James and the New Orleans Hornets’ Chris Paul. According to Warrick, Anthony will bring the Oklahoma City Thnder’s Kevin Durant, who scored 57-points on Tuesday, and the Denver Nuggets Ty Lawson.

Warrick is choosing players who are from the Philadelphia/ Baltimore area. Some of the players he mentioned as possibilities are: Detroit Piston Richard Hamilton, Sacramento King’s Tyreke Evans and John Salmons, Orlando Magic Jameer Nelson, Houston Rocket Kyle Lowry, Minnesota Timberwolve Wayne Ellington, ex-Piston Ronald Murray, Charlotte Bobcat Gerald Henderson and Philadelphia 76er Lou Williams.

I wish the lockout would end, but if a deal isn’t going to be done soon, I hope NBA players continue to schedule these games.

It is interesting to see who can get who to join his team and it’s great to see a basketball game again. It might be summer league, but in my eyes, these games are just as professional as a scheduled NBA game.

Actually, summer league games can be more enjoyable than NBA games at times because fame seeking referees are nowhere to be found. The zebras seemed to be a fan of the game more than anything when they were reffing Tuesday’s game where James and Durant put on a show.

This is how the game of basketball should be. There wasn’t any ticky-tack fouls or off the court distractions. The game was basketball players playing basketball.

Unfortunately for Warrick, Anthony’s team is going to destroy him if this is what the rosters are going to look like. I’d take Melo, Durantula and Lawson over Warrick and the list of players he mentioned…no doubt.

Hopefully, Chicago natives Dwanye Wade and Derrick Rose will build teams and face each other. I would be more than happy to buy a ticket to see D-Rose and Durant whoop D-Wade and James.

Bring the summer league phenomenon to Chicago…
